What is an Allergy?
It is an abnormal reaction to a normally harmless substance found in the environment or in food. Depending on the allergy, the reaction can occur seasonally or throughout the year. An allergic reaction occurs when our body produces an increased amount of antibodies called IgE in response to a foreign substance. The IgE antibodies in our body react with an allergen (the offending foreign substance) and release chemicals that cause the symptoms of allergy.
Who suffers from Allergy?
1 in 6 people have allergies and the numbers are increasing. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood surveyed more than 700,000 children in 56 countries since 1991. The latest numbers from ISAAC show a significant worldwide increase in allergy symptoms, particularly among younger children. Anyone can suffer from an allergic reaction. It is not limited to specific age groups, ethnicity, geographic locations or gender. Tendencies to develop allergies are often inherited.
